Chumash Ethnobotanic Garden Volunteer Opportunities

What: Trail Maintenance Program
Where: San Marcos Foothills Preserve West Mesa
When: Late December/Early January
Details: In close collaboration with local Chumash groups, Channel Islands Restoration is establishing a native plant garden in the community. As of 2023, our first project is underway, planting purple needlegrass (Stipa pulchra) and other natives at the San Marcos Foothills West Mesa. We will soon need volunteers to help with native planting and maintenance onsite.

Details: Help us provide easier trail accessibility, stable footing, and designated walking paths for visitors and outdoor enthusiasts at the San Marcos Foothills Preserve.

Enjoy the company of like-minded community members while learning about best practices for trail maintenance, restoration, and management in the local area.

Trail volunteers meet each month at the San Marcos Foothills West Mesa, at the end of Via Gaitero Road at 9:00 AM. Registration is free.
